Starting an Online Business

Recommended "How-To" Guide
For Starting an Internet Business

On this page:

There is a lot of hype that surrounds the Internet. We've all heard the "get-rich-quick" schemes. But the truth of the matter is: doing business online is a job. You need to learn certain skills to be successful.

Free resources: do they work?

Free resources are hugely popular with the budding online entrepreneur. And why shouldn't they be? You can find all sorts of free submission tools, free information, free everything that the newbie hopes will help them make money quickly.

Unfortunately, this is not going to help you create a successful business. Why?

  • Free submission tools appeal more to the person doing the submitting, then to the person doing the searching. Very rarely will someone actually go to a free site to look through classified ads or links.

  • Free information can be contradictory and is usually incomplete. You wouldn't search for free bits of information here and there if you wanted to become an engineer, would you? Same thing goes for online businesses: you need a complete, unified source of information so that you can learn effectively.

How a "how-to" guide will help you:

"How-to" guides or manuals can be a tremendous help to the aspiring netrepreneur. A good manual is absolutely priceless. Good manuals will:

  • Teach you how to do things yourself rather than point you to services that will do it for you. When you're first starting out you don't have a whole lot of money ... You will need to be able to create your own website and do your own Internet marketing.

  • Let you learn from the mistakes of the author. The author should be someone with a successful online business of their own; that way he or she will be able to tell you what they tried and why the things they tried didn't work.

  • Show you what works. The author became successful somehow, right? A good how-to guide will tell you what works, and show you how to do it.

  • Explain concepts clearly and illustrate them with real-life examples. Real-life examples will greatly help your learning. Actually seeing concepts in action can really help and motivate you!

  • Save you money! How? Good manuals teach you what doesn't work as well as what does. Thus you don't end up blowing your money on useless advertising that yield no results!
